A mechanical engineering degree is a four-year program that covers the fundamental concepts and principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, materials science, and engineering design. Students also learn how to use various tools and software for modeling, simulation, testing, and optimization of mechanical systems.

A mechanical engineer usually needs a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or mechanical engineering technology to enter the field. However, some employers may prefer candidates with a master’s degree or a doctoral degree for advanced or specialized positions. A mechanical engineer may also need to obtain a professional license or certification to practice in certain states or countries.

Entry requirements

  1. Must have passed the Higher Secondary (HS) examination of the AHSEC or any equivalent examination with English, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as the subjects, in one seating.
  2. He/ She must secure at least 45% marks in aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (40% for SC & ST candidates).
  3. Must not be more than 21 years or not less than 17 years of age as on 1st August, 2022. The Upper age limit is relaxable to 22 years in case of B.Sc. passed candidates. For SC/ST candidates, the upper age limit may be relaxed by 3 years.
  4. Must be mentally and physically fit and must possess a good moral character.

Career opportunities

A mechanical engineering degree prepares students for a wide range of career options in different sectors. Some of the common roles that mechanical engineers can pursue are:

  • Design Engineer
  • Manufacturing Engineer
  • Quality Engineer
  • Project Engineer
  • Maintenance Engineer
  • Research Engineer
  • Consultant Engineer

The 4 year undergraduate course in Mechanical Engineering is offered under the university’s specialised School of Engineering and Technology.

Special Features of the Department
  • It offers a curriculum that develops individuals who can contribute to the development and implementation of science and technology.
  • It covers a variety of courses that stem from four fundamental branches of mechanical engineering — mechanics of materials, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and dynamics of machinery — as well as courses that extend to related fields.
  • It provides a laboratory life that develops abilities through interaction with faculty members and peers, and through presenting research at academic conferences.
  • It has a world-leading faculty and research network that conduct cutting-edge research in collaboration with research institutes and companies in Japan and overseas.
  • It prepares students to become global leaders in industry and academia and reside at the frontier of knowledge.
