Department of Chemistry

Chemistry often referred to as central science links mathematics, physics, biology to medicine, earth science to environment, agriculture to food science. Chemistry gives insight into different physical and biological phenomena, drug discovery etc.A chemist is able to take the challenge of the problems faced by the society and environment for innovative development. In Girijananda Chowdhury University, the Department of Chemistry is committed to provide good quality education with the help of newly designed syllabus giving emphasis on much needed practical knowledge and in a holistic approach to produce competent individuals with qualities required in industries, research organizations and other fields.

The Department of Chemistry is one of the oldest departments of Girijananda Chowdhury University started in the year 2006 under the guidance of Prof. Bipin Chandra Bhuyan. The Chemistry department has a rich tradition of imparting high-quality teaching since its inception. Department of Chemistry started the journey as an allied department to nurture the engineering students of BE programme affiliated to Gauhati University. Undergraduate programme was introduced in the year 2020 to cater the need of the students. Department of Chemistry under the school of Natural Sciences is offering four – year  undergraduate courses in the line of NEP 2020 from the year 2023 with multidisciplinary approach. The department is continuously evolving with the introduction of post graduate programme and Ph.D programme from 2023 – 2024 session.

Talks of eminent chemists are organized time to time in different events of the institute. Department also participate in National Science Day organized every year and other extracurricular activities of the institute.

Vision

We shall lead our students in exploring the world of Chemistry in bio, material, geo and environmental sciences for better understanding the interaction of molecules shaping the life on the planet.

Mission

Our Mission is
1. To enable and enhance understanding of how electronic and geometric structures
determine the function of matter.
2. To extend the knowledge and skill of Chemical Science to engineering, energy,
pharmaceutical biosciences, geosciences and atmospheric sciences.
3. To promote teaching and research on ‘Green Material’.
4. To engage in dialogue with the society for explaining the frontiers of Chemical Science
for building a sustainable earth.

On behalf of the staff and students, I sincerely welcome you to the Department of Chemistry at Girijananda Chowdhury University. The philosophy of the department is to build strong foundation of the budding engineers and raise capable, skilled and trained chemists by nurturing their analytical abilities and critical thinking who can serve the society. We started our journey in the year 2006 as an allied department supporting B.E. Programme affiliated to Gauhati University. The department is continuously growing with the introduction of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes with the help of well qualified and dedicated faculty members and contributions of senior professors who previously served the department. We have designed our curriculum as per NEP 2020 for overall growth of the students and make them globally competent.

Best Wishes
