Department of Sociology & Social Work

The Department of Sociology and Social Work at Girijananda Chowdhury University admits students to its programmes of studies, which include Undergraduate and Post- Graduate programmes, from across the state and the country, at large. The under graduate and post graduate programmes offered by the department in addition to the theory imparted in the classroom shall focus on components of experiential learning by means of field work, outreach and community engagement activities which are the core strengths of the progamme.  The department conducts extensive study on Sociology of Religion, Sociology of Minorities, Sociology of Health, Sociology of Development, Economic Sociology, Social Anthropology, Environmental Sociology, Community Development, Medical and Psychiatric Social Work and Family and Child Welfare among others.

Our vision is to cultivate the spirit of social consciousness, ethical reasoning, empathetic and critical reflection among students through a holistic, multidisciplinary education, research and community engagement.

Mission

The mission of the Department is to produce graduates who are:

  1. Sensitive to the emerging needs and concerns of the society with an empathetic and caring attitude;
  2. Explore oneself and the world through a critical paradigm, examine the social world, analyse the issues that confront the society from an understanding of sociological and social work theories and interventions;
  3. Strongly rooted in the core values of the profession focusing on a democratic, equitable and empowering approach;
  4. To nurture the intellectual, personal and professional growth of the students by providing them opportunities for practical learning and leadership and motivate them in choosing a variety of career paths;
  5. Exposed to rigorous experiential pedagogy of theoretical inputs, community engagement and through innovative and interdisciplinary approach.

Dear Students,

Warm Greetings and welcome to the Girijananda Chowdhury University (GCU) family. I sincerely wish that you all have an enriching experience during your stay at GCU.

The Department provides the ambience for innovative means to explore and know more about you, your strengths and also about the society you live in. You will gain a conceptual understanding of the society, culture, norms, functioning of groups and communities along with an indepth theoretical base of sociological and social work theories, ethics, principles, skills and methods of interventions. Our library offers you the scope to further your knowledge and open your minds to the world outside. Interaction and discussion with experts in the field, guest lectures, workshops and seminars shall be ongoing activities and programmes of the department.

In addition to the regular class room lectures, you will also be involved in an array of social activities within the campus and in the neighbourhood communities. You shall be part of all the collaborative initiatives of the department with other organizations and universities to organize conferences, seminars and research activities. I encourage you to wholeheartedly get involved in all the activities of the department and the university, put in your best efforts to constructively utilize your time during your stay at GCU.

Entry requirements

B.A. Sociology and BSW: Candidates with 10+2 from any discipline/stream.

M.A. Sociology and MSW: Candidates with a Bachelors’ Degree from any recognized Indian/Foreign university.
