The Department of English and Foreign Languages at Girijananda Chowdhury University is committed to questioning and reformulating the basic principles of literature and language. Offering courses that draw upon a range of global English literature for semantic as well as artistic exploration and in-depth study, the department aims to expand the understanding of the linguistic and literary nature of the greater English expression. The department also offers foreign language courses for skill-enhancing students. Foreign language learning expands one’s view of the world. The opportunity to get higher education or work abroad is always open to all students. Touching and comparing to other cultures enable students to understand the different senses of value, philosophy, and way of thinking.
To create global citizens by fostering academic excellence and a supportive environment that nurtures the aesthetics of the English literature and language, along with other foreign languages.
The Department English and Foreign Languages envisions to create an intellectual and conducive environment of study for its students so that they explore their full potentials, and become global citizens. What can be the better way to achieve this than to study literatures and languages of the world? The study of language and literature has a unique characteristic to enter into dialogue with other discourses and opening up a way to multidisciplinary critique. All our courses in BA, MA, and PhD programmes are designed with this multidisciplinary approach which is at the heart and centre of NEP 2020. Our students get opportunities to study literature, linguistics, English language teaching, visual studies, gender, creative literature etc. In addition to this, we strive to provide a wide range of research opportunities to our research scholars including, but not limited to gender studies, regional and cultural studies, Southeast Asian literatures, comparative literature etc.
It is said that one participates more effectively and responsibly in a multi-cultural world if one knows multiple languages. Therefore, Our department offers courses in three foreign languages which are taught by one native speaker of Japanese and some highly professional faculty. We have introduced Japanese Language and Cultures as a minor course in the Four Year Degree Programme. Moreover, we offer Japanese, French, and Russian as Skill Enhancement Courses. Apart from these all, we also offer Ability enhancement courses to the students accros disciplines. However, our endeavors do not stop with these and we continue to cater to the needs of developing the communication and professional skills of the students of the university. For this, our teachers have developed Training programmes for the students which are not part of their formal curriculum.
The strength of the department lies with the team of experienced and dedicated faculty members. We believe and take it as our personal responsibility to bring out the holistic development of our students. It is our neverending effort to teach the students to translate their dreams to reality and become the best versions of themselves. They are encouraged to present and publish their works in conferences and journals.
I take pride to be a part of this team and commit to ensure that our department succeeds in achieving all its goals and continues to be a leading force in the field of literature and language studies of the region and the nation as well.
