The B.Tech 5th and 7th semester students from the Department of Civil Engineering, GCU were exposed to various aspects of construction work through a site visit within the campus on 12th August 2025. Before the visit, they were introduced to different safety measures and instructed to wear the necessary safety gear, including helmets, to protect themselves from potential hazards.
After getting ready, the faculty members led the students around the site and explained the various parts of the structure. The students observed different stages of construction and learned how each component contributes to the building’s overall stability.
They measured the preliminary dimensions of beams and columns using measuring tapes, which helped them understand the sizes and positions of these elements within the structure. They also measured the spacing between two stirrups in reinforced concrete members. Stirrups hold the main reinforcement bars in place and help resist shear forces, making them a crucial component of the structure.
During the visit, the students also observed the use of cover blocks—small blocks placed between the reinforcement bars and the formwork to ensure the required concrete cover. This cover protects the steel from corrosion and enhances the structure’s durability.
The visit provided students with hands-on experience in construction site activities. By directly observing and measuring structural elements, they were able to connect the theoretical knowledge of structural design from their curriculum with real-life applications. It was an informative experience that enhanced their understanding of construction practices and safety procedures.
