The Department of Civil Engineering of Girijananda Chowdhury University (GCU), Guwahati, organized a visit to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Guwahati Office, on September 2, 2025, for the B.Tech Civil Engineering students. The visit was highly informative and provided a deeper understanding of the role of BIS in maintaining quality and safety standards in engineering and construction practices.
During the visit, the officials briefed the students on the importance of Indian Standards (IS codes) in civil engineering and the certification processes followed by BIS. They were also taken on a guided tour of the Chemical and Mechanical Testing Laboratories, where they observed various testing procedures conducted on construction materials to ensure compliance with national standards.
The visit was led by Mrs. Anwesha Gayan (Assistant Professor, Civil Engineering Department) and Dr. Pallab Jyoti Das (Assistant Professor, Civil Engineering Department), under the guidance of Dr. Moytri Sarmah (Associate Professor, Mathematics Department).
The visit greatly enriched the students’ practical knowledge and highlighted the critical role of standardization in infrastructure development.
