Enhancing Practical Expertise: GCU’s Immersive Summer Program in Pharmaceutical Sciences

School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Girijananda Chowdhury University,Guwahati,Assam organized 6-Day Summer Immersion from 29th July-2nd August 2024.

Aim:Bridge gap between academic learning & practical demands of pharmaceutical industry through skill development in : Solid Dosage Form Development,Laboratory Animal Handling & Experimental Techniques,Analytical Instrument Handling.

Inaugural Session host Dr. Anupam Sarma welcomed all present while emphasizing the program’s objectives & the importance of developing hands-on skills.Prof.(Dr.) Kandarpa Das,Vice Chancellor,GCU,in his address emphasized upon the program’s alignment with University Grants Commission’s outcome-based education initiatives designed to equip students with practical skills.

Dr. Anupam Sarma & Dr. Nikhil Biswas led training in solid dosage form development with emphasis on aspects like formulation techniques,processing methods & evaluation strategies.Participants gained thorough understanding of complexities through involvement in selecting raw materials & testing final product.

Dr. Bhrigu Kumar Das & Mr. Sanswrang Basumatary coordinated the laboratory animal handling & associated session,focusing on ethical handling,proper care & experimental techniques.An IASST,Guwahati resource person also talked about the ethical aspect and skilling particpants to conduct accurate preclinical studies responsibly.

Dr. Jun Mani Kalita & Mr. Sushankar Kushari led the analytical instrument handling training on High-Performance Liquid Chromatography,High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography,Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy & Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry training participants to calibrate,operate & troubleshoot them.

The program ended with a field visit to Bio Tech Park,Guwahati to familiarise participants with research culture along with insights into the advanced instruments used intensively in pharmaceutical research.

24 students from GCU participated in the program that underscored the importance & value of skill development initiatives in fostering the next gen pharmaceutical professionals.
