The Department of Civil Engineering, Girijananda Chowdhury University (GCU), Guwahati, organized an educational visit to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Borjhar, on September 4, 2025, for the B.Tech 5th Semester Civil Engineering students.
The visit proved to be highly informative, offering students a deeper understanding of the crucial role of meteorology in engineering and construction practices. In civil engineering, accurate weather and climate data are essential for planning and designing infrastructure, ensuring structural safety, and mitigating risks related to floods, rainfall, wind, and temperature variations.
During the session, IMD officials highlighted the significance of meteorology in civil engineering and explained the weather forecasting processes undertaken by the department. The students were also given a guided tour of the facilities, where they observed the functioning of various instruments and learned about the methods used to record temperature, surface air pressure, upper-air pressure, and other meteorological parameters.
The visit was coordinated and led by Mr. Rashidul Alam (Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering) and Dr. Kasturi Bhuyan (Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering). The exposure not only enhanced the students’ practical knowledge but also emphasized the vital integration of meteorology in civil engineering applications.
