Activities of the Department

To understand the beauty of the subject and to develop love for it, the department has been organizing quiz, seminars, symposia, workshops on mathematics and science among students and teachers from various disciplines

The Department of Mathematics, Girijananda Chowdhury University conducted a workshop at D. K. College, Mirza on ‘Mathematics Applications and Related Career’ on March 22, 2024. Dr. Madhumita Mahanta, Assistant Professor & HOD and Dr. Ankur Jyoti Kashyap, Assistant Professor conducted the workshop highlighting on pursuing career after the completion of undergraduate courses with Mathematics and real life applications. Alongwith many other applications, Dr. Ankur Jyoti Kashyap presented the Lotka–Volterra predator–prey model, which is a pair of first order nonlinear differential frequently used to describe the dynamics of biological systems in which two species interact, one as a predator and the other as prey. The students of the department of Mathematics attended the workshop. Dr. Nabajyoti Das, Principal, D. K. College also addressed the gathering and encouraged students to attend such workshops frequently to learn and enjoy the beauty of Mathematics in Nature

A Workshop on ‘Mathematics Applications and Related Career’ at D. K. College Mirza on 22.03.2024

The department of Mathematics organised a seminar on ‘Digits within Numbers in Scientific and Real Data’ in the university premises. Prof. Alex Ely Kossovsky specialized in Physics and Pure Mathematics at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and in Applied Mathematics and Statistics at the City University of New York. Prof. Kossovsky is the author of the books “Benford’s Law”, “Studies in Benford’s Law”, “Small is Beautiful” and “The Birth of Science”.He is the inventor of a patented mathematical algorithm used in data fraud detection and analysis, and is considered by some to be the world’s leading expert on the topic of Benford’s Law mathematics and its many scientific and forensics applications.

The department of Mathematics, Girijananda Chowdhury University (GCU) Assam and the department of Mathematics, Pub Kamrup College together celebrated Pi Day in the Ankuron Auditorium of Pub Kamrup College, Baihata Chariali. The programme started with a chorus presented by the students of the department of Mathematics, Pub Kamrup College. Dr. Bhupen Kumar Sarma, Principal, Pub Kamrup College and Dr. Madhumita Mahanta, HoD, Mathematics, GCU Assam offered their welcome address. Ms. Rina Deka, HoD, Mathematics, Pub Kamrup College discussed the significance of the day. Prof. Hemanta Kumar Sarmah, Head of the department of Mathematics, Gauhati University graced the occasion with his informative talk on ‘Importance of Mathematics and related career’. A Science Quiz competition was conducted by Mr. Sayantan Saikia among the students of bothe the institutions. Nil Pawan Kakati of Pub Kamrup College won the first Prize. The second prize was won by Kapil Dev Goswami and Sahil Mohammad Saberin of Pub Kamrup College. Debasish Bachyas and Bidip Talukdar of Girijananda Chowdhury University won the third prize. Faculty members and students of both the institutions attended the event.

Celebration of Pi Day 2024 (International Day of Mathematics) at Pub Kamrup College, Baihata Chariali on 14.03.2024

Girijananda Chowdhury University observed Mathematics week from 18th to 24th December 2023. The department of mathematics has been taking initiative to create awareness programme among the students to appreciate the beauty and importance of mathematics in everyday lives. 19-20 December 2023 The faculties of the department of Mathematics of the university visited 12 nearby schools and interacted with students and faculties to make them aware of the role of mathematics in everyday life and discussed about the programmes of celebrating National Mathematics Day on 22 December 2023 in the university premises. 22 December 2023 The department of Mathematics of Girijananda Chowdhury University (GCU) Assam celebrated National Mathematics Day, the birth anniversary of the great Indian Mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan on 22 December 2023 at the University premises. The event started with the welcome address by Mr. Jasodaranjan Das, President of Shrimanta Shankar Academy Society. The event includes various programmes which are briefed as follows. The celebration focuses on # Ramanujan’s Life and Works # Workshop on Vedic mathematics # Quiz Competition A state level prize-money quiz competition was organized among students from class IX to XII. Mr. Spandan Priyam of Jorhat Quiz Forum conducted the quiz. The first prize was won by Raichand Saharia and Mayukh Deb Roy of Army Public School, Narengi. Partha Pratim Roy of Maharshi Vidya Mandir and Bornil Bikash Bayan of South Point School, Guwahati won the second prize and the third prize was won by Nirangkush Kallol Parashar and Akshat Maurya of Sarala Birla Gyan Jyoti, Guwahati. The event was hosted by Dr. Moytri Sarmah, Assistant Professor of the Department of Mathematics and Ms. Monalisa Gautam, Assistant Professor of the Department of Civil Engineering. Almost 100 students and teachers coming from various schools across the state attended the ceremony. The students and teachers were given a tour to the university’s AICTE Idea Lab in the campus.

Celebration of “Mathematics Week’’ from 18th – 24th December 2023

The Department of Mathematics, Girijananda Chowdhury University organised an awareness programme for the postgraduate students from Management and Commerce, Computer Applications and the School of Natural Sciences. The programme mainly focused on preparing students for competitive exams. The resource persons of the programme were Mr. Sudipta Kalita, Branch Manager, State Bank of India, Bhangagarh and Mr. Manoj Kumar Kalita, Deputy Manager, State Bank of India, Bhangagarh. The session was followed by an engaging conversation with the students over various inquiries pertaining to the preparation for Bank Exams. The students were invited to enroll in the complimentary coaching programme for SBI PO, an initiative undertaken by the SBI Officers' Association. The interactive session was attended by the faculty members from the Department of Mathematics and the Head of the Department of Commerce. Around 70 students participated in the programme.
