Professor Shantanu Chakravarty joined Girijananda Chowdhury University in August, 2023. Prior to joining this University, he was the Dean (i/c) of the School of Human and Social Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Political Science and Head (i/c) of the Department of Law at Cotton University. He previously held the position of the Head, Department of Political Science at Cotton University.
Prof. Chakravarty did his Master of Arts (MA) and PhD from the Gauhati University. His areas of specialization and interests are Sociological Criminology, Prison Administration and Human Rights. He has several textbooks, research articles and book chapters under his name and chaired various seminars and orientation/refresher courses as Resource Person. His book The Second Sentence: A Tale of Lifers published in 2018, is based on the life of the prisoners.
Prof. Chakravarty was also a member of the Academic Council of Cotton University; the Syllabus Committee of Gauhati University, National Law University and Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University. He is also associated with the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) and Assam Higher Secondary Council (AHSEC).
Prof. Chakravarty is currently supervising the doctoral dissertations of 5 research scholars in the Department of Political Science, Cotton University and one scholar has been awarded the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy under his supervision. He is also serving as an examiner of doctoral theses of various universities.
