The Department of Civil Engineering of Girijananda Chowdhury University (GCU), Guwahati, organized an industrial visit to the Pollution Control Board Central Laboratory at Bamunimaidam, Guwahati, on February 11, 2025. The purpose of this industrial visit was to educate B.Tech 6th semester students about environmental laws, methods of pollution control and its monitoring.
A total of 60 students accompanied by Mr. Bhaskar Jyoti Medhi (Assistant Professor), Ms. Monalisha Gautom (Assistant Professor) and Mr. Rashidul Alam (Assistant Professor) from the Civil Engineering Department at GCU visited the board.
The Central Laboratory, which consists of five sections—Water, Wastewater, Bacteriology, Bio-monitoring & Bioassay, and Air—was visited by the students. This laboratory serves as the Board’s referral laboratory and is furnished with advanced instruments for the examination of water, air, and solids for all potential contaminants.
Chief Env. Scientist, Dr. Gautam Krishna Misra and other scientists of the board explained to the students the importance of pollution control, its impact on the environment, and the measures taken to reduce pollution.
They talked about how industry, automobiles, and human activity contribute to environmental deterioration. The scientists also emphasized how the Pollution Control Board keeps an eye on pollution levels, enforces laws, and encourages environment friendly behaviour.
They urged the students to embrace environmentally responsible practices such as cutting back on plastic use, saving water, and planting trees in order to contribute to environmental preservation.
