Ms. Riju Deka is presently designated as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences at Girijananda Chowdhury University (GCU), Assam. Her academic and professional interests lie in Medical Laboratory Sciences, Clinical Microbiology, laboratory diagnostics, research, and innovative education. In her present role, she is engaged in teaching and academic activities, with a keen interest in helping students develop a strong understanding of both the theoretical foundations and practical applications of laboratory techniques. She completed her Master of Medical Laboratory Technology (MMLT) with specialization in Microbiology from Assam down town University, Assam, in 2026, securing a CGPA of 8.3. Prior to this, she completed her Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Technology (BMLT) from the same university in 2022 with a CGPA of 7.51, and her Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT) in 2020 with 76.13%.
Her postgraduate research was centred on the study titled “Emergence of Acinetobacter spp. isolates from clinical samples in tertiary hospitals.” The work provided her with research experience in clinical microbiology, bacterial identification, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, virulence pattern and the investigation of clinically important Acinetobacter isolates. Her research journey has strengthened her interest in clinical microbiology and the growing challenges associated with antimicrobial resistance and laboratory diagnosis.
Her research work was recognised with the Best Research Paper Award at the International Conference on Transformative Innovation in Life Sciences (ICTILS-2026) held at Srimad Andavan Arts and Science College, Tiruchirappalli, for her work entitled “Emergence of Acinetobacter spp. isolates from clinical samples in tertiary hospitals.” Her research work also involved the submission of bacterial isolates to GenBank, reflecting her exposure to contemporary approaches in microbiological research and scientific documentation.
Alongside her academic journey, she has gained teaching experience in different educational settings. Before joining Girijananda Chowdhury University, she worked as a Guest Faculty at Sarbananda Deka School of Nursing, Sarthebari, a Guest Faculty at Krinshaguru Adhyatmik Visvavidyalaya, and as a Faculty at Sankardev Institute of Science and Technology, Baihata Chariali. These experiences have helped her develop an understanding of classroom teaching, student engagement, academic mentoring, and the importance of connecting theoretical concepts with practical laboratory applications.
Her clinical and laboratory training has provided her with practical exposure to a range of diagnostic disciplines. She received training at Bhubaneswar Boroah Cancer Institute, Guwahati, Nemcare Super Speciality Hospital, Guwahati, and Popular Diagnostic Centre, Nalbari. Through these experiences, she gained exposure to areas including Microbiology, Hematology, Biochemistry, Clinical Pathology, Blood Bank, Phlebotomy, Histopathology, and Cytopathology. These experiences have contributed to her understanding of the role of laboratory professionals in supporting accurate and timely clinical diagnosis.
