Dr. Himamani Kalita is currently working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Botany, Girijananda Chowdhury University, Azara, Guwahati. She completed her B.Sc. from Handique Girls’ College in 2016 and earned her M.Sc. in Botany from Gauhati University in 2018. She further obtained M.Phil. degree from Gauhati University in 2020. She pursued her Ph.D. in Botany, specializing in algal taxonomy in the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary and Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary, under the supervision of Prof. Partha Pratim Baruah at the Department of Botany, Gauhati University.
Her research interests encompass algal taxonomy, freshwater algal diversity, biodiversity conservation, and ecological studies. She possesses over five years of research experience and has also supervised dissertation students. She has published several research papers in reputed national and international journals. In addition, she has actively participated in numerous national and international seminars, workshops, conferences, and academic programmes. She has presented her research findings at various scientific forums and has made significant contributions to research and academic activities in the field of Phycology. She has also served as a rapporteur at different academic and scientific events. She is also actively involved in field-based studies, biodiversity surveys, and awareness programmes related to plant science and environmental conservation.
Apart from academics, she is well known for her excellent debating and public speaking skills and has served as the Debate and Symposium Secretary of the Post Graduate Students’ Union, Gauhati University (2017–18). As a secretary she organized various events under her section in Varsity week, GU, Inter college Youth Festival and East Zone Inter University Youth Festival. She has also been invited as a judge, speaker, and panelist in various academic and literary events as well as Talk shows in Television, reflecting her dedication towards education, leadership, and student engagement.
