Dr. Bishnu Saikia is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at Girijananda Chowdhury University, Guwahati. He holds a Ph.D. in Mass Communication from Gauhati University, with his doctoral thesis titled “Goa Trance – A Convergence.” His research interests include indigenous knowledge systems, folk media, new media, cinema, intra-personal communication, Tantra, Buddhism, iconography, and culture.
Dr. Saikia has a diverse academic, creative, and media-industry background, with more than six years of teaching experience at Gauhati University. He began his teaching career as a Guest Faculty in Mass Communication at the Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL), Gauhati University, and later served as a Teaching Associate in the Department of Communication and Journalism, Gauhati University.
In cinema, he worked as the Head Publicist for Kothanodi, which won the National Film Award (Rajat Kamal) for Best Assamese Film in 2015, and as Production Designer for Emuthi Puthi, which received the National Film Award for Best Assamese Film in 2023. He also contributed to a documentary project on Buddhism in North-East India with the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA).
His musical journey includes working as a DJ and music producer with Kamakhya Records, an independent label focusing on underground experimental, psychedelic and ambient music. He has also served as the Creative Head of The Mileage, a registered publication.
Dr. Saikia has presented research at national and international academic forums and was awarded Best Paper at an international seminar on Indigenous Knowledge and Intellectual Property Rights. He has also served as a resource person at an ICSSR-sponsored national seminar.
Beyond academics, Dr. Saikia has a strong sporting background. During his school years, he represented at the national-level table tennis tournament and became a zonal and district-level champion. He also participated in a high-altitude expedition to Sandakphu at approximately 12,000 feet under the Assam Mountaineering Association at the age of under 12.
