INSIDE SUN PHARMA : A blend of education and industry insights

Students and faculty members from the School of Pharmaceutical Science at Girijananda Chowdhury University, Assam, embarked on an insightful industrial visit to Sun Pharma, a prominent pharmaceutical industry located in the Palasbari area of Assam. The visit, which took place on February 22nd and 23rd, 2024, aimed to provide a practical understanding of pharmaceutical manufacturing processes to 58 students of the D. Pharm 1st Year, accompanied by 2 faculty members.

During the visit, Mr. Sachidananda Panda, the General Manager of Production at Sun Pharma, Guwahati, led the students through a comprehensive tour of the plant, demonstrating various activities and processes involved in manufacturing common pharmaceutical dosage forms such as tablets, capsules, liquid orals, and injectables. Mr. Panda’s engagement with the students helped bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical applications, aligning with the students’ academic curriculum.

In addition to the plant tour, an induction session was organized by the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Department of Sun Pharma. The session focused on raising awareness about road safety and educating students about the safety measures to be followed within the manufacturing plant. This initiative aimed to instill a sense of responsibility and adherence to safety protocols among the future pharmaceutical professionals.

The successful coordination of this industrial visit was credited to Mr. Mrinmoy Deka from the Department of Pharmaceutics and Mr. R. James from the Department of Pharmacology at the School of Pharmaceutical Science, Girijananda Chowdhury University, Assam. Their efforts ensured that the students gained valuable insights and practical knowledge that will benefit them in their future careers in the pharmaceutical industry.

Students were particularly impressed by the commitment to quality control measures and the rigorous safety protocols implemented by Sun Pharma. The experience provided them with a broader perspective on the industry’s environmental sustainability efforts. The industrial visit to Sun Pharma proved to be a significant and enriching experience for the students, fostering a deeper appreciation or the practical applications of Chemistry in the pharmaceutical Industry. During the visit the student team was accompanied by the faculty members Dr. Swarnali Pathak and Dr. Nirmala Devi.
