International Sign Language Week for Deaf people in collaboration with Assam Association of Deaf

In celebration of the International Sign Language Week for Deaf people, an annual event observed during the fourth week of September every year, Girijananda Chowdhury University’s Department of Sociology and Social Work in collaboration with Assam Association of Deaf – an NGO based in Assam, organised a Sign Language Awareness Campaign on September 26, 2024.

The theme for 26th September is focused on ‘Sign up for Sign Language Rights.”The programme was graced by the Hon’ble President of Shrimanta Shankar Academy, Shri. Jasoda Ranjan Das, the Hon’ble Chancellor of GCU, Prof. Jayanta Deka and the Deans of different Schools. A video message by Mr. Tapan Sharma, General Secretary of Assam Association of the Deaf set the tone for the programme followed by an interactive session presented by Angela Lahon, Miss Deaf India 2016, a faculty of Assam Association of the Deaf along with the interpreter Mr. Ankur Sharmawho demonstrated basic sign language skillsaimed at promoting sign language as a valuable means of communication. Students from the NGO presented a mime act depicting the evils of drug addiction. Ms. Bandita Dutta and Mr. Pankaj Narzary, the Professors and many teachers and staff represented Assam Association of the Deaf. Students of the Department of Sociology and Social Work played an active role in organizing the event. The event concluded with the State Anthem of Assam being sung in sign language that showcased the significant relationship established by Giirjananda Chowdhury University with the Assam Association of the Deaf in creating an environment that fosters inclusiveness for people with hearing disability in the state of Assam
