The Centre for Legal Studies and Departments of Political Science and History alongwith the NSS Cell, Girijananda Chowdhury University, Assam hosted the observation of “Constitution Day” on 26th November, 2024 to honour the significance of the Constitution. The program started with the welcoming of the Guest of Honor, Hon’ble Justice Mr. Ajit Borthakur, Hon’ble Member of Assam Human Rights Commission and Former Judge of Gauhati High Court, Assam. The Guest was felicitated by Dr. Bhaswati Sarmah, Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science, GCU.
The welcome speech was given by Prof. Shantanu Chakraborty, Dean, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, GCU, Assam, who welcomed the Guest of Honor andled on the worthiness of the Constitution Day. Then, the keynote speech was given by Hon’ble Justice Mr. Ajit Borthakur, who spoke on the significance of the Preamble of the Constitution, the Preface of the Constitution. He also emphasized the importance of Justice stating that it means “what a person really deserves”. He further, talked about the significance of the Right to Equality, Article 14-18, the Right to life and Personal Liberty, Article 21, etc.
Alongwith that, he remarked on the relevance of the Kesavananda Bharati Case. He also highlighted the importance of Fundamental duties enshrined in Article 51A of the Constitution. He ended his speech signifying the importance of the Doctrine of Basic Structure.After the speech, the pledge taking ceremony was led by the Chancellor, GCU, Prof. Jayanta Deka. After that, the vote of thanks was given by Dr. Niju Moni Das, Head, Centre for Legal Studies, GCU, Assam. The program ended with the National Anthem.
