Biography

Rituparna Choudhury joined the Department of Sociology, Girijananda Chowdhury University as a Guest Faculty in August 2024. She graduated from Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Guwahati Campus in Social Sciences (Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences of the Integrated BA-MA Programme in Social Sciences) in 2016 and pursued Masters in Sociology (MA in Sociology) from Tezpur University (2016-18).

She had been awarded the Bronze Medal in BA Programme in TISS and the Gold Medal in MA Programme in Tezpur University. She had been actively involved in a number of academic and non-academic activities throughout her career. She was also the recipient of UGC-NET in Sociology both in 2017 and 2019. She has been a part of various research organisations like 4th Wheel, Centre for Evaluation and Development as well as Institute of Perception Studies, working as an active researcher in the areas of tourism, livelihood, urbanisation in India, gender etc.

She has also been the recipient of the Zubaan-Sasakawa Peace Fellowship, 2018 where her research was based on the idea of gender and kitchen. Her academic journey of teaching started in 2019 when she was selected as a Guest Faculty of Department of Sociology, Gauhati University. After that, she taught Sociology in different eminent higher education institutes of Assam like Kaziranga University, Nazir Ajmal Memorial College of Education etc. She also has professional experience in administrative line with her work experience as a District ISA Coordinator of Jal Jeevan Mission under Public Health Engineering Department, Goalpara PHE Division, where she had to supervise the works of the different NGOs involved in the implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission in Goalpara district. She has also participated in a number of workshops, seminars, FDPs, conferences etc. Her first major breakthrough in this regard was when she was selected to present her paper in the Graduate Students Conference, Department of HSS, IIT Delhi as early as a student of Masters.

She has earlier taught papers of Sociology like Rural Sociology, Urban Sociology, Sociological Theories, Sociology of North East India, Research Methodology, Sociology of Religion etc. Along with these areas, her other areas of interest include Sociology of Gender, Sociology of Development, Family and Kinship, Sociology of Science and Medical Sociology.

She has always believed in communicative and interactive teaching-learning environment where there is two-way communication between the teachers and students. She also believes that a teacher is indeed a friend, philosopher and guide for his/her students. She likes to bring creative and brainstorming ideas into the class and make teaching-learning process an interesting process rather than a monotonous one. Apart from academics, she has also been active in co-curricular activities since her study days with active participation in Literary and Cultural events like debate, quiz, extempore speech, recitation, singing, mono-acting, mime, dance etc. She is also a recipient of the Visharad Degree in Hindustani Classical Music from Bhatkhande School of Music.
